To function in our real life roles and to be what others expect us to be, we modify our true selves and create an external persona that we present to the outside world. In effect, we create a mask that we show to others. This mask gets us through life, but it can lack depth. In this “cult” of the conscious, we get lost rapidly.
Dreams remind us of the existence of our inner subconsciousness that we often hide under our external masks. But similar to an ignored child who does something dramatic to get our attention, when we reject and repress the existence of our subconscious side, it ultimately will confront us through dreams.
Carl Jung once said, “There is life behind consciousness”. Dreams prompt and remind us to look inward, to listen to our subconscious selves. Dreams restore balance and alert us when we are missing something important. Based on our past experiences, they can also warn us that what we are doing now might not be the right way.
To be happier and to gain the most personal growth, we first need to be truthful to ourselves. To do so, it is vital that we learn to understand the language of dreams, accept them as a source of knowledge and depth, and be open to their meaning and message.
